GEORGIA STREET BRIDGE, SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA
The project aimed to complete seismic retrofit and rehabilitation work to revitalize the bridge’s functionality, while maintaining the historic characteristics of the bridge and retaining walls. The goal was to improve pedestrian and bicycle access and sustain urban infrastructure, all while keeping the community’s unique character. Kleinfelder collaborated with historic architects during the design phase to find solutions for preserving the historical value of the structures. They also developed a reconstruction plan to enhance public safety by addressing structural deficiencies, seismic vulnerability, and extensive deterioration. Ultimately, all parties involved were able to produce a result that balanced safety, historic preservation, cost, and seismic performance.
