LLOYD STREET SYNAGOGUE, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
The Lloyd Street Synagogue in Baltimore, Maryland, holds the distinction of being the third-oldest synagogue building still standing in the United States. Constructed in 1845 as the first synagogue in the state, it exemplifies the Greek Revival architectural style, a testament to the design of prominent architect Robert Cary Long Jr. Initially serving the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, the synagogue later transitioned to a Catholic church before returning to its Jewish roots as the home of Shomrei Mishmeres Ha-Kodesh. Its significance extends beyond its architectural beauty, as it stands as a living testament to the evolving history of Baltimore’s Jewish community and its enduring presence. The Lloyd Street Synagogue is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
