Originally completed in 1925 for The Miami News newspaper business, it is an example of Mediterranean Revival style standing at 255 feet next to the ocean. Once used to process Cuban refugees, it was sold to private ownership and donated to Miami Dade College for use as a cultural and educational center. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building was renovated in 2011 which included a new KEIM stucco system that was coated with an unknown thick acrylic elastomeric paint.
From Keim:
The historic stucco was separating from the underlying brick and had cracks throughout its entire surface. Our primary concerns were water intrusion and public safety. To address these issues, we will remove any loose stucco, clean the surfaces, and then apply KEIM Universalputz Render. This process will include embedding KEIM Glass Fiber Mesh reinforcement between layers of the Universalputz Render to create a stucco finish that will not crack or separate from the brick substrate over time. The Universalputz Render has a vapor permeability of 9 perms and is water-resistant, which effectively manages moisture and helps keep the building dry in this humid climate.
