55 Third Avenue, New York, NY

A mixed use, 4000 square foot new construction addition to the rear and side of an existing high-rise in Manhattan required deft use of exterior materials to interpret the architect’s modern design.  Materials were chosen to harmonize with the exterior facade of the original structure, but also adding a new aesthetic that would fit the building’s new luxury renovation.  A durable and smooth finish was desired, but the key element of the design were expanses up to 80′ with no visual breaks.  The smooth surface needed to appear monolithic with no breaks for control or expansion joints.  In addition, the installation required a surface that could be direct applied to stud construction with Durock panel sheathing.

From Keim:

Universalputz Historic Mix Stucco has physical properties that allow for new construction over frame construction without use of extensive control/expansion joints.  Here, the exterior Durock was the surface with a vapor barrier.  The fine finish achievable with a lime-rich stucco system was also very appealing, as was the final mineral matte finish that was achieved with Soldalit All-Surface Exterior Mineral Silicate finish.  Absolutely no sheen was desired with no light-bounce back.
