The project aimed to revitalize a deteriorated mural on the concrete garage, transforming it into a new, meaningful, bright, and beautiful artwork that would stand the test of time and enhance the visual appeal around the library. The design, created by artist Silvia López Chavez, pays tribute to libraries and their impact on communities. Against a vibrant backdrop of colors and featuring motifs such as flying birds, paper planes, and open books, the Pearl Street façade showcases a pair of hands holding the cover of an open book with the word “Wonder” inscribed. Additionally, the façade includes the words “Knowledge,” “Learn,” and “Connect,” symbolizing the daily activities that take place at the Cambridge Public Library and its branches. The combination of the lively and bright colors and the mural’s deeper meaning will benefit this library for decades.
